The AgingWell Training program equips property managers and maintenance staff to recognize and respond to residents’ well-being needs with empathy, communication, and teamwork.
Developed by LeadingAge Maryland, the curriculum builds empathy, communication, and problem-solving skills that help staff address residents’ well-being while supporting teamwork across housing and service coordination roles. This 4-hour, live, in person training was piloted in 36 affordable senior housing communities in Maryland between 2023-2025.

What is the AgingWell Training?
The AgingWell Training prepares property managers and maintenance staff for an enhanced role in supporting the well-being of their residents. Through the training, staff will:
- Learn to recognize potential challenges and safety among residents.
- Apply communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills to support resident well-being.
- Strengthen collaboration with service coordinators by sharing insights and observations.

This training is designed for affordable housing property staff including:
- Property management and assistant managers
- Service coordinators and resident services staff
- Front desk / concierge staff
- Maintenance and facilities teams
- Housekeeping and janitorial staff
- Regional management and executive leadership
What Should You Expect
The training covers the following topics:
- Understanding aging, ageism, empathy, person-centered approaches, and the role of property managers and maintenance staff
- Effective communication and productive conflict
- Responding to challenging behaviors and situations
- Self-care
Training Goals
- Build understanding of aging: Provide staff with foundational knowledge of the aging process and help them distinguish between typical aging and potential concerns
- Promote empathy and person-centered approaches: Address ageism and encourage respectful, compassionate interactions with residents
- Strengthen communication skills: Equip staff with strategies to communicate effectively and manage conflict in productive ways
- Recognize and respond to concerns: Help staff identify potential safety or well-being “red flags” and respond appropriately to challenging situations
- Support teamwork and resilience: Encourage collaboration among staff while promoting self-care and healthy professional boundaries
