Distinguished Service Awards

Each year, LeadingAge PA recognizes individuals and organizations that display extraordinary compassion and commitment to seniors and aging services as a whole through the Distinguished Service Awards. For members, this is a great opportunity to publicly recognize the shining stars on your team. Who will you nominate?

Paul P. Haas Lifetime Achievement Award

 

Jim Pieffer has dedicated more than 40 years to advancing aging services at Presbyterian SeniorCare Network, overseeing the development of over 40 senior living and affordable housing communities that support more than 7,500 older adults annually in Western Pennsylvania. He has expanded services for underserved populations, forged strong partnerships with health systems and community organizations, and served on the LeadingAge PA Board of Directors, including as chair, while mentoring future leaders in the sector.

Manager of the Year

 

Brikena Calaku has dedicated over 26 years to Paul’s Run, rising from part-time hostess to Dining Room Manager. She oversees service for over 250 meals each evening and leads a diverse team with a hands-on approach. Calaku is known for her steady leadership and commitment to staff development, ensuring a positive dining experience for residents.

Leader of the Year

 

Jonathan Hollinger has served as President & CEO of Pleasant View Communities since 2015, focusing on culture, connection, and sustainable growth for over 400 residents. With 25 years of experience in public accounting, healthcare, and nonprofit management, he has positioned Pleasant View as a mission-driven community and employer of choice while advocating for policies to enhance aging services at the state level.

Volunteer of the Year

 

Diane Dantos has volunteered at Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg, a Presbyterian Senior Living community, since 2021, contributing over 4,800 hours. She supports residents with daily activities such as meals, exercise, and group engagement, while also fostering companionship. Her reliable presence helps create a stable, supportive environment for residents and staff alike.

Licensed Caregiver of the Year

 

Mary Holman recently retired after dedicating 46 years to Messiah Lifeways, starting her career at Messiah Village in 1979. She held various roles, including Nursing Supervisor and Director of Nursing, with a focus on hands-on dementia care. Holman is recognized as a mentor and educator who has significantly impacted residents, families, and staff throughout the community.

Direct Caregiver of the Year

 

Ralph Bergado is a Certified Nursing Assistant at Foxdale Village, recognized for his compassionate care and strong reliability since joining the community in 2019. He consistently arrives early and stays late to meet residents’ needs, demonstrating clinical attentiveness and a calm presence during challenging moments. His dedication significantly enhances the quality of care at Foxdale Village.

    Staff Member of the Year

     

    Debra Marshall has dedicated 25 years to EverTrue Buffalo Valley, enhancing residents' quality of life with engagement programs. She engages residents with memory changes using sensory methods such as music and nature activities, fostering participation through hands-on experiences and group activities to create a supportive environment for residents and staff.

    Innovation of the Year

     

    Presbyterian SeniorCare Network's Mosaic Apartments is an LGBTQ+-friendly affordable housing community in Oakland that offers safe living for older adults and their allies. Featuring 48 units, it addresses housing gaps for LGBTQ+ seniors, a historically underserved group. The first of its kind in western Pennsylvania, Mosaic Apartments highlights the demand for and importance of equitable housing options for older adults.
