Did You Know? Benzodiazepine Tapering Guideline Update

Benzodiazepine medications (i.e. lorazepam, clonazepam) are commonly used by our older adult population for many conditions including anxiety, insomnia, seizures, muscle spasms, and panic disorders. Although considered a standard of therapy for these ailments, they are associated with significant safety concerns for older adults. As caregivers and medical providers, how can we ensure that these therapies are appropriately used in our communities? The recent interdisciplinary Joint Clinical Practice Guideline update provides practical guidance for assessment and reduction of routine and long-standing benzodiazepine therapies in older adults, including for those that may be at risk for physical dependence.
