Messiah Lifeways® Celebrates 130 Years of Serving Older Adults While Looking to the Future

August 27, 2026

MECHANICSBURG, PA — As Messiah Lifeways® marks 130 years of serving older adults and their families this year, the organization's Board of Directors has renewed the contract of President and CEO Karl Brummer for an additional five-year term, reaffirming its commitment to stable leadership and continued innovation.

Founded in 1896 as the Messiah Home, Messiah Lifeways has evolved alongside the changing needs of older adults while remaining grounded in its mission of providing Christ-centered services that enrich the lives of older adults, families, and communities. Today, the organization serves hundreds of residents and clients through a broad continuum of living options, healthcare services, community support programs, and lifelong learning opportunities.

"The 130th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate not only where we've been, but where we're going," said Dave Warren, Chair of the Messiah Lifeways Board of Directors. "The Board unanimously approved a new five-year contract for Karl because of his steady leadership, strategic vision and unwavering commitment to our mission. As we look ahead to the next chapter of Messiah Lifeways, we are confident that Karl is the right leader to guide our organization into the future."

During Brummer's tenure, Messiah Lifeways has advanced significant strategic initiatives designed to strengthen its impact for current and future generations. Recent milestones include the development of Fernecrest, continued investment in team members and organizational culture, and implementation of long-range strategies focused on innovation, stewardship, and sustainable growth.

"I am honored by the confidence the Board has placed in me," Brummer said. "This recognition is truly a reflection of the incredible team that serves the residents, clients and one another every day. As we celebrate 130 years of ministry, I'm grateful for those who have built this organization before us and excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue living our mission together."

Throughout its 130-year history, Messiah Lifeways has continually adapted to meet the evolving needs of older adults—from its beginnings as a small home for aging individuals to becoming a trusted provider of residential living, healthcare, community-based services, and home and community programs. While much has changed over the past century, the organization's commitment to compassionate service and faithful stewardship has remained constant.

"As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we're reminded that our greatest strength has always been our people," said Warren. "The Board believes that leadership continuity, paired with the dedication of team members, positions Messiah Lifeways to continue making a meaningful difference for generations to come."

Messiah Lifeways plans to continue recognizing its 130th anniversary throughout the coming year by celebrating its rich history, honoring those who have shaped the organization, and highlighting its vision for the future.
