Jacqueline Dunbar-Jacob

Jacqueline Dunbar-Jacob (Jackie) is Distinguished Service Professor and Dean Emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.  She holds secondary appointments in psychology, epidemiology, and occupational therapy.  Jackie has been at the School of Nursing since 1987, where she has served as director of research, department chair, and dean (21 years).  Her research emphasis, funded by the NIH, has addressed adherence to treatment among persons with chronic conditions.  Her work has resulted in 166 papers and chapters.

Jackie received her BSN in nursing from Florida State University, her MSN from the University of California San Francisco, and her PhD in counseling psychology from Stanford University.  She is both a registered nurse and a licensed psychologist.  She is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, the American Psychological Association, the Society of Behavioral Medicine, the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, and the American Heart Association.  She has served as president of the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, as well as the Friends of the National Institute for Nursing Research.  She currently serves as the data champion and on the executive committee of the Pennsylvania Action Coalition, an advocacy organization seeking to implement the National Academy of Medicine recommendations for nursing as well as former chair and now member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials Implementation Steering Committee.

Currently Jackie is on sabbatical pending retirement in January 2024 and is working as a consultant with the Jewish Healthcare Foundation on two projects:  Revisiting the Teaching Nursing Home and the Women’s Health Inequity in Old Age.
