Residents and their loved ones entrust senior living organizations and their staff to provide the care and support the resident needs to live out the rest of their life in comfort and dignity. However, when unexpected harm occurs to a resident, organizations traditionally follow a strategy of "deny-and-defend", providing limited information to the resident and family and avoiding any admission of regret. Unfortunately, this often leaves residents and their families to come to their own conclusions following an event- which may lead them to assume that an organization failed to provide the level of care, support, and open communication that they expected. This can result in allegations of negligence and malpractice, which could cause significant financial loss and damage to the reputation of the organization.

In Part 2 of this two-part webinar series, Georgia Reiner, Aging Services Consultant at ECRI, will lead a discussion of how the CANDOR (Communication and Optimal Resolution) toolkit offers a proactive, resident-centered approach to adverse event response. We will then use real-life case scenarios to illustrate how the CANDOR process can help achieve an amicable resolution for residents and their families and reduce malpractice claims for senior living organizations. Finally, attendees will review risk management practices that senior living organizations can utilize to increase safety event reporting and deliver emotional first aid to staff, residents, and families after unexpected adverse events.
