Spreading Sunshine Through Volunteer Appreciation

"Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves."  -- James Matthew Barrie

As we enter the early days of springtime, we welcome April and the recognition of volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Month. Now more than ever, people helping others is worth celebrating. The pandemic has restricted many of the typical volunteer activities over the last 13 months. However, those all too familiar COVID restrictions have spawned creative opportunities for volunteering in new ways, continuing to spread sunshine to residents and staff. Such examples include snowmen being built in front of resident windows after snowstorms, card showers for residents and staff, and outdoor parades. And for this, we need to celebrate!

While a return to the customary volunteer events and recognition may not yet be possible, you can still recognize and engage your volunteers!

  • Consider sharing a video message from your executive director, commending and thanking your volunteers.
  • Plan an outdoor, socially distanced recognition event.
  • Post a volunteer slide show on your social media pages or website.
  • Call volunteers to simply say thank you.
  • Host a virtual celebration.
  • Sent a handwritten note.

When I transitioned from my role as an executive director to working for Wagman Construction, it was important to me that Wagman truly embraced their mission and core values. I am fortunate to work for a company that uplifts the core value of Community and encourages employees to volunteer and engage with the wider community. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." As we celebrate volunteerism during this month, I encourage anyone who is interested to explore volunteer opportunities in your community or reach out to LeadingAge PA to learn how you, as a member, can volunteer to help shape the future of the Association. There are so many simple ways to lend your time, talent, and treasures. Volunteers are vital!
